Kostas Fortounis played a pivotal role as Olympiakos emerged victorious in the first leg of the Europa Conference League quarterfinals. The Greek midfielder scored and provided an assist in his team's 3-2 triumph over Fenerbahce on Thursday.
Fortounis put Olympiakos ahead in the 25th minute, calmly slotting home from close range. He then turned provider in the 65th minute, setting up Konrad de la Fuente to double the lead. Fenerbahce fought back with goals from Enner Valencia and Michy Batshuayi, but Fortounis's involvement in all three Olympiakos goals proved too important to overcome.
With the first-leg win, Olympiakos takes a slender advantage into the return leg in Istanbul next week. The aggregate winner will advance to the semifinals, where they will face either Feyenoord or Sparta Prague.
Europa Conference League Knockout Stage Line-Up Complete
The line-up for the 2023-24 UEFA Europa Conference League knockout stages is now complete after Dinamo Zagreb, Fenerbahce, Ferencvaros, and Legia Warsaw booked their places alongside Olympiakos. The draw for the quarterfinals will take place on Friday, March 17, with the semis and final to be played in May.
