US Soccer Finalizes Format for 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Eight MLS Teams to Participate in Round of 16
Sporting Kansas City, Seattle Sounders, and LAFC Among Qualified Clubs
WEB CHICAGO, March 1, 2024 - US Soccer has unveiled the format for the highly anticipated 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with eight Major League Soccer (MLS) teams set to join the tournament at the Round of 16 stage.
The prestigious competition, which brings together teams from across the American soccer pyramid, will feature a total of 104 clubs competing for the coveted trophy. The Round of 16 will see the entry of MLS giants Sporting Kansas City, the Seattle Sounders, and LAFC, all of whom have a rich history in the tournament.
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, however, will not be among the eight MLS teams advancing to the Round of 16. Despite Miami's recent addition to the MLS, the team has struggled to find success in the Open Cup, having failed to progress beyond the fourth round in its history.
The full format of the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is as follows:
- First Round: March 21-22, 2024
- Second Round: March 28-29, 2024
- Third Round: April 18-19, 2024
- Round of 32: May 9-10, 2024
- Round of 16: May 30-31, 2024
- Quarterfinals: June 27-28, 2024
- Semifinals: July 18-19, 2024
- Final: September 7, 2024
