Morgan Spurlock, the groundbreaking documentary filmmaker known for his Oscar-nominated 2004 film "Super Size Me," has passed away at the age of 53.

Spurlock's death was confirmed by his wife, Alexandra Jamieson, who shared a statement on Instagram. "I am deeply saddened to share the news that my husband, Morgan Spurlock, passed away peacefully in our home surrounded by his family," she wrote.

"Super Size Me," a searing indictment of the fast food industry, chronicled Spurlock's experience eating only McDonald's food for 30 days. The film received critical acclaim and sparked a national conversation about the dangers of unhealthy eating habits.

Spurlock's work as a filmmaker extended beyond "Super Size Me." He founded the production studio Warrior Poets and directed numerous other documentaries, including "The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" (2011), "POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" (2012), and "One Nation Under Food" (2015).
